Water Bill Donation Opportunity
The following letter was recently sent to all City of Commerce water customers:
Dear Commerce Water Customer:
Enclosed please find a response card which offers you the opportunity to make a voluntary donation to the Commerce Public Library along with your monthly payment for city services. If you would like to help the Library in this way, please sign the card and return it to the City. By doing so, you will enable us to apply any amount above your current balance to a new special fund designed to support the Library.
The Library offers numerous benefits to our community. These benefits include:
1. Adult Education classes, including preparation for the GED and ESL
2. Children’s literacy programs like the Summer Reading Program and Story Time
3. TexShare database – access to general information and periodicals for homework, research, etc.
4. Free Internet access via our bank of computers
5. Genealogy research training and assistance
6. Astonishing historical collection
7. Personal business services such as notary, fax, and copy services
8. The new passport acceptance program
The Commerce Public Library is a non-profit organization which receives financial support from the City of Commerce, Hunt County, and various local charitable organizations. However, this generous support is not enough to pay the Library’s operating costs. The Library relies on donations from individuals and businesses and other fundraising efforts to help keep their doors open. Total expenses for last year were on track to exceed income by several thousand dollars. The Library Board was forced to reduce staff hours and benefits and to reduce the number of operating hours to make ends meet. While cutting services was painful, the Board realized it was the fiscally responsible thing to do and took the steps necessary for the Library’s survival. While the Library is not currently in danger of closing – the cost-saving measures have been largely successful – your generous financial help will help insure the Library will continue to serve the needs of our community going forward.
Your monthly donation to the library is entirely voluntary and should not be deemed a tax or an additional fee. However, we urge you to consider rounding up your water bill each month to support your library. Collectively, your one- and two-dollar monthly donations will add up to significant funds to support a valuable community resource. We urge you to donate to the Commerce Public Library.
Cordially,
Carolyn Trezevant, CPL Board President Michael Odom, CPL Board Vice President
